Have you always wanted to be singer?
No, but I've always had a tremendous passion for music. I actually started out playing the saxophone back in 6th grade, and continued that through the beginning of college...So, I basically started singing about 2 years ago for about 4 hours a day. I also started to record myself and play it back so that I could criticize my own voice, and change what I needed to change.
Have you entered any talent shows?
No. Most of the talent shows I've been to took place during middle school and high school...I am planning on doing the next season of American Idol though. I was gonna go to the Memphis audition last year, but they had to cancel it because of Hurricane Katrina
"That Tingle", so What's the song about?
"That Tingle" is basically about the feeling you get from being in love with someone. When you think about that special person and it just makes you feel so good inside. You can't keep your mind off of them. No matter how your day is going, or your life for that matter, thinking of that person makes everything alright.
What kind of music would you like your album to be about?
As far as musical styles, I would like to fuse R&B, Pop, Hip-Hop, Classical, Jazz, and Latin rythms in order to create something that is at once unique, and universally appealing. I guess this stems from my multi-cultural background of African-American and Cuban-American. I kind of want people to get the variety that I get on Thanksgiving or Christmas, when I get to eat soul food and Latin food on the same day, in addition to the traditional turkey (I hope that comes across clearly, lol). As far as lyrical content, I want my music to be about life, love, and having fun. Being from Miami, you know I have to have some tight club tracks on there.
Which producers would you like to work with?
Well, I am a producer, and I believe I can do just as good a job, or better, than the majority of big producers out there if I have the same equipment as them. But, I admire, and learn from Lil' Jon, Jazzy Phae, Jermaine Dupri, Swizz Beats, Quincy Jones, Walter Afanasieff, Timbaland, Missy, Brian McKnight, and others.
Which songwriters?
I am a songwriter as well, and I do believe that you can't sing your songs with as much emotion and conviction if you don't at least have a hand in writing them.
Your favorite Artist to collaborate with?
Mariah Carey.
How many songs have you recorded so far?
I've recorded only one complete song so far, and you can hear it over at www.myspace.com/juliusleon.
I just made that song about 2 months ago. I have also produced Hip-hop/rock beats for a group called Subliminal Methods.
What's your favorite song you've ever written?
"That Tingle"
Who have you been most inspired by?
Mariah Carey. The fact that she writes her own music is what made me admire her the most, because there are plenty of people who just sing. Additionally, she comes from a similar background as me both financially, and ethnically. I can really relate to most of her songs. My favorite songs of her's are the ones that deal with perserverance and faith.
Has anyone compare you to another artist? If so, in what ways do you think you are similar to them?
I have not been compared to another artist yet.
Is Miami the next capital of southern R&B music?
I believe Miami is growing to become the capital of a lot of things. I think southern Hip-hop/R&B started in Miami with Luther "Uncle Luke" Campbell and the 2 Live Crew.
