The Cove 100 read four ways: who leads each component

The method, inverted

The main list ranks singers on a total. This page throws the total away and ranks the top twenty on each component separately, because the four sub-rankings disagree with the headline order far more than most readers expect.

What this page is

Nothing here is a new judgement. Every number below is taken from the component breakdowns already published on the main list for ranks one to twenty, re-sorted. Ranks twenty-one to fifty carry a placing and a one-line note but no component scores, so they cannot appear.

The point of reading the list this way is that it shows what the equal weighting actually does. A singer can lead a component outright and sit thirteenth overall; another can appear in no component top three and finish fifth. Both happen below.

Instrument: The raw voice

Range is part of it but a small part. Tone, evenness across registers and control at low volume matter more, because that is where a voice is hardest to fake.

What the four rankings show

Three things stand out once the total is removed, and all three are checkable against the published cards.

Four singers reach the top band of every component. Scoring 23 or better in all four are Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson — which is the top five minus Mariah Carey, whose Live 21 puts her outside it. Consistency across all four components, rather than a peak in any one, is what the top of this list is actually made of.

The widest spread on the list belongs to Nina Simone: eight points, from a perfect Interpretation 25 down to an Influence 17 that is joint-lowest in the top twenty. No other card travels that far. Second widest, at six, are Céline Dion, Christina Aguilera and Beyoncé — and in every one of those four cases the low end is Influence, which says something about that component rather than about those singers.

Leading a component does not carry you up the list. Céline Dion co-leads two of the four and finishes thirteenth, because the other two are the lowest in the top fifteen. Luther Vandross holds no component maximum at all and finishes seventh, on three scores of 24 and one of 20. Equal weighting produces that, and it is the whole argument for it.

The disagreements between the four sub-orders are the point. A ranking that produced four identical rankings would be measuring one thing four times, and the method would be decorative.

The same treatment of the recordings list is at The Cove 100 Recordings read four ways, where the components behave very differently.

Every figure on this page is taken from the published component breakdowns on The Cove 100. No score has been created, adjusted or estimated here. Where a singer has a full entry arguing their card, their name links to it.
