On Cove’s list

The 100 Pop Songs of the New Millennium was Cove’s 2005 attempt to measure the decade so far. In the magazine’s words it measures the most radio aired and video played pop singles from the year 2000 through to now, compiled from music-television rotation and national radio charts. Among the entries is He loves u Not, Dream. The archived page runs some entries together, so we do not infer a rank from its order. The song’s inclusion is the fact.

The lineup, dated

MusicBrainz records each member’s membership with dates. Four names appear twice, because those four returned for a reunion:

Member Joined Left
Alex Chester 1998-10 1999-01
Melissa Schuman 1998-10 2002-04
Holly Blake–Arnstein 1998-10 2003
Ashley Poole 1998-10 2003
Diana Ortiz 1999-01 2003
Kasey Sheridan 2002 2003
Holly Blake–Arnstein 2015-05-11 2016-10-05
Alex Chester 2015-05-11 2016-10-05
Ashley Poole 2015-05-11 2016-10-05
Melissa Schuman 2015-05-11 2016-10-05

Read top to bottom, that is a four-piece from October 1998, one change in January 1999, a departure in April 2002, a replacement in 2002 and an end in 2003. Then comes a reunion of four from 11 May 2015 to 5 October 2016, the date MusicBrainz gives for the group’s end. Wikipedia’s account agrees in outline. It says the group formed in 1998, disbanded after label conflicts around the second album, and reunited briefly in 2015.

Releases

First released Title Type Label on first release
2001-01-23 It Was All a Dream Album Bad Boy Records
2008-05-13 Reality Album Bad Boy Entertainment

MusicBrainz lists eight release groups under this artist. The table shows the first album, It Was All a Dream (23 January 2001, Bad Boy Records), and Reality, which MusicBrainz dates to 13 May 2008 on Bad Boy. Wikipedia says Reality was the 2003 album that never got a wide release, so the 2008 date is most likely when it finally appeared, though neither source says so. We have left out three 2008–2009 albums that MusicBrainz also files here, on 2620 Music and Clockwork Entertainment. We could not confirm that they belong to this group, and they may belong to another act of the same name.

Singles

MusicBrainz dates “He Loves U Not” to 12 September 2000, on Bad Boy and Puff Daddy Records. It lists “This Is Me (Remixes)” in July 2001 and “Crazy” in 2003. Wikipedia names “Crazy” as the lead single of the shelved second album. Chart positions are reported elsewhere and are not repeated here.

It Was All a Dream shares its MusicBrainz release date, 23 January 2001, with O-Town’s debut album, another act from the same Cove list. The third act profiled from it is Blu Cantrell.

It Was All a Dream, track by track

The earliest release MusicBrainz lists is a worldwide issue dated only to 2001. On it the single is spelled “He Loves You Not”, at track 2, and a remix closes the album.
