Alexa Wilkinson: the 2007–2011 records, and Cove

Breaking & Entering, 2006–2008

Alexa Wilkinson

A singer-songwriter whose solo releases, as MusicBrainz lists them, fall between 2007 and 2011. The name is on the roster of Cove’s emerging-artist section, which ran over the same years.

The identification, stated first

Cove’s surviving Breaking & Entering page lists “Alexa Wilkinson” among its former featured artists and says nothing more. The interview, if there was one, is lost. So the link between that name and the records below is an inference, and we want it to be visible as one.

The inference rests on three things. MusicBrainz has one recording artist of that name. Wilkinson’s solo releases begin inside the period Cove gives for the roster, during the period 2006-2008. And Wikipedia dates the solo career from 2006 to 2011, which overlaps the years the section ran. That is circumstantial. If better evidence turns up, this page will change.

Five release groups, and MusicBrainz records a label for none of them, which fits an independent artist but is not evidence of one. The count agrees with Wikipedia’s summary: two full-length albums and one EP. Lullaby Appetite carries only the year 2007; the single “Miles Away” has a full date, 12 October 2007.

A thread back to Cove

Wikipedia records that “Miles Away” was used on MTV’s The Hills. That detail has an echo in the archive. In his Breaking & Entering interview, Nick Howard told Cove about the evening one of his own songs was played on the same programme. His sister made a cake and the family watched together. For singers of that generation who were not on a major label, a placement on a television drama was one of the few routes to a large audience, and two names on one short roster took it. That says something about the scene Cove was covering, though nothing about how the magazine chose them.

Since 2011

MusicBrainz shows nothing under the name after the 2011 album Lions and EP Mechanical Circles. Wikipedia adds that Wilkinson later played in a band called Mother’s Daughter, from 2019 to 2022. MusicBrainz has no entry for that band that we could connect, so it has no table here. Tour dates, sales and radio play are not published in either source.

The rest of the roster

Of the eighteen names on Cove’s roster, only a few can be matched to a dated discography with any confidence. The others are Griffin House and Nick Howard. Every other name, including the ones with no discography at all, is on the archive’s new-artists page.

Lullaby Appetite, track by track

The first album, the one out while Cove’s section ran. MusicBrainz dates it only to 2007. “Miles Away”, the 2007 single, is not on this release.
