Black Kids: Partie Traumatic on Cove’s 2008 list

The Editor’s List, August 2008

Black Kids

A Jacksonville band whose first album came out in July 2008. A month later it supplied six of the ten songs on Cove’s Alternative list. No other act on any of that edition’s eight lists held as many places.

Six of ten

The Alternative chart on Cove’s August 2008 Editor’s List reads almost like a track listing:

All six are credited to Partie Traumatic, and all six titles are on the album’s MusicBrainz track listing. The fourth is a remix of a track there called “I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You”. The other four places went to CSS (two), Neil Halstead and MGMT. We counted every list in that edition. The next-largest share on any of them is five, held by Ashanti on R&B and by Rebecca Lynn Howard on Country.

The magazine gave no reasons, only a method: Songs are rated by the Editors of Cove Magazine. This list is by no means world wide, since albums selected are normally released only in North America. Six songs from one record is still a strong opinion.

MusicBrainz lists fifteen release groups. The table shows albums and EPs, including three live recordings from 2008. The singles, among them “Hurricane Jane” and the “I’m Not Gonna Teach…” single, are left out for length. The 2007 EP Wizard of Ahhhs is the earliest release. The first dated release of Partie Traumatic is 7 July 2008, and the earliest label on it is AlmostGold Recordings.

Who they are

MusicBrainz records the band as formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 2006. Wikipedia describes them as indie rock and synth-pop, formed by Reggie Youngblood, who sang and played guitar, with Ali Youngblood, Dawn Watley, Owen Holmes and Kevin Snow. It also notes that the 2007 EP was what first drew international attention to them, which fits the timing of Cove’s interest.

What is documented since

An EP, Cemetery Lips, in 2009, then only a 2014 single on MusicBrainz until the album ROOKIE in February 2017, with a run of singles that year. Wikipedia describes a hiatus and an intermittent return. Chart positions are reported elsewhere, but not in a form we cite on this page.

The same edition’s Pop list picked another 2008 debut, The Bridges.

Partie Traumatic, track by track

On the US release of 22 July 2008, Cove’s six picks are tracks 1 and 3 to 6, plus the remix of “I’m Not Gonna Teach…” that closes the record at track 11, which is the version Cove listed. The original of that song, track 7, is not on Cove’s list.
