“Practically dominates”

Cove’s round-up of the May 2008 Editor’s Lists, On the Chart, gave him a paragraph of his own: Lyfe Jennings practically dominates the hip hop list with five chart appearances. It goes on to name one of the five, “You Think You’ve Got It Bad (feat. Wyclef Jean)”. That song was No. 1 on the hip hop list and No. 5 on the R&B list, so it was on two lists at once.

The May lists were not archived, so the other four songs are not recorded. MusicBrainz places “You Think You’ve Got It Bad” on Lyfe Change, released 29 April 2008. By the August edition, which does survive, he no longer appears on any of the eight lists.

About the artist

Wikipedia’s article presents him as a writer and producer of his own soul and R&B records who also plays guitar, bass and piano on them. MusicBrainz records his origin as Toledo. Cove filed a soul singer under hip hop, and counted the same song on the R&B list too, which says something about how loosely the magazine’s genre lists were drawn by 2008.

What is documented since

Five more releases after Lyfe Change, the latest a 2021 EP. MusicBrainz shows no release after 2021, and neither source we use gives sales or chart figures that this page could cite.

The same post mentioned Lizz Wright, whose “My Heart” was falling from No. 1, Phil Stacey and El Perro del Mar. Another R&B singer with a 2005 album in Cove’s archive is Tweet.

Lyfe Change, track by track

“You Think You’ve Got It Bad” is track 8. The track title in MusicBrainz does not carry the Wyclef Jean credit that Cove printed with it.
