Lizz Wright: My Heart on Cove’s list, and the albums

On the Chart, May 2008

Lizz Wright

A jazz and gospel singer from Hahira, Georgia, whose third album came out in February 2008. By May one of its songs had already been No. 1 on Cove’s Editor’s List and was on its way down. Her name also turns up in a second, unrelated part of the archive.

What Cove wrote

Cove’s blog page On the Chart summarised the May 2008 Editor’s Lists. It mentions her in one line: Former No.1 song, Lizz Wright “My Heart” falls five spaces from 1-5. The May lists themselves were not archived, so this sentence is all that survives of them for her. “My Heart” is on The Orchard according to MusicBrainz. Its earliest release there is dated February 2008, which places Cove’s No. 1 within a few months of the album.

The second appearance

Her name turns up again in Cove’s interview with Nick Howard, as a credit. Listing the musicians on his album, Howard named Nicholas D’Amato and put “Lizz Wright” in brackets after him, the way session players are often introduced, by an artist they have worked with. It is a small thing. But it shows the magazine’s two strands, the lists and the emerging-artist interviews, crossing the same corner of the New York scene.

MusicBrainz lists her albums from Salt (2003) onwards. The first four are on Verve and its Verve Forecast imprint. Freedom & Surrender (2015) and Grace (2017) are on Concord. A live set and Shadow (2024) carry Blues & Greens Records. The newest entry is Nearness, dated 25 September 2026 on Candid, weeks before this page was compiled. A second, undated release group called Holding Space is MusicBrainz’s own duplicate-looking entry, and we have left it as recorded.

Origin

MusicBrainz names Hahira, in the United States, as where she is from. Wikipedia describes her as a jazz and gospel singer, and the Verve years fit that description. Verve Forecast also appears on The Bridges’ 2008 debut, another Cove pick that year.

What the record shows

A continuous run of albums from 2003 to 2026, on several label homes, with no gap longer than five years in the MusicBrainz record. Cove caught her during the Verve years. The page does not attempt a critical judgement of the albums. Sources: the Cove page for what the magazine said, MusicBrainz for the records.
